DUTCH UNSTOPPABLE
Confidently and ruthlessly disposing of one rival after the other, Holland made a beeline for the gold medals at the European Team Championship in Leon. After a draw in the first round the Dutch team didn't look back and won all their remaining matches with remarkable ease.

UKRAINE BESTS RUSSIAN FAVOURITES
At the World Team Championships in Yerevan both the pre-tournament favourites from Russia and the eager Armenian squad were left empty-handed when Ukraine rose to the occasion in a scintillating finale.

CAUTION IN HOOGEVEEN

TONY MILES 1955-2001
'After the war the situation changed little. Soviet grandmasters dominated the world arena, and kept generations of English players in a state of unlimited respect. This continued until Tony Miles appeared on the scene.', writes Genna Sosonko in a penetrating obituary of the first British grandmaster.

THE END OF A UNIQUE TRADITION
The Veterans beat the Ladies 26-24 at the Clog Dance tournament in Amsterdam. Yet few, if any, of the participants cared about victory or defeat as a unique series of luxury events organised by Joop van Oosterom's Association Max Euwe came to a close.

KASPAROV WRECKS ANOTHER NATION
In the Prague Castle Garry Kasparov took on the Czech national team, ironically led by 'tourist' Sergey Movsesian, in another of his famous clock simuls. This time The Wrecker won 5«-2«.

REYKJAVIK
Jan Timman loves to play in Iceland and so does his friend Ivan Sokolov, who took first prize in the Johann Thorir Jonsson Memorial.

WORLD CHAMPION BY POST
In the year that the Dutch chess community commemorated the centenary of the birth of Max Euwe, Holland finally welcomed another chess world champion. Gert Timmerman saw his patience and perseverance rewarded when his last opponent finally resigned a hopeless game.

SOS: THE GUNSBERG VARIATION
It looks like a loss of tempo, but contains more venom than you'd expect!

A CHEATERS' PARADISE
It has often been said that chess and the Internet were made for each other. Hans Ree has his doubts, unless Free Fighting Chess is our future.
