KRAMNIK-KASPAROV, PART 1
At the press conference preceding the Brain Games World Championship in London, Garry Kasparov described Vladimir Kramnik as a 'real opponent'. How right he was. In the first eight of 16 games the challenger self-confidently dictated the course of the match to reach a 4,5-3,5 halfway lead. Dirk Jan ten Geuzendam attended the opening ceremony, watched the first skirmishes at the Riverside Studios and spoke to the imperturbable challenger on the eve of an expedition that might be the high point of his career.

THE SEATTLE MIRACLE
Thanks to the efforts of Yasser Seirawan and the newly founded Seattle Chess Foundation the US Championship took place after all. Benjamin, Shabalov and the same Seirawan shared the title. Last year's champion Boris Gulko reports.

FIDE WORLD CUP IN SHENYANG
Top-seed Vishy Anand lived up to expectations, eliminating most direct rivals himself at the inaugural FIDE World Cup in Shenyang. In the final the Indian star beat Evgeny Bareev to cash $ 50,000.
