KARPOV SUCCESSFULLY DEFENDS FIDE TITLE
In his home-town Elista FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov saw Anatoly Karpov grind down Gata Kamsky in a captivating struggle. The final score of the FIDE world championship match that put Kalmykia on the chess map for good was a convincing 10,5-7,5. Christophe Bouton reports. Game notes by both(!) players and Jan Timman.

KRAMNIK AND TOPALOV TAKE DOS HERMANAS
The eighth `supertorneo' was the first ever ten-player event that reached category 19. An accolade that, unfortunately, was not matched by the playing conditions in hotel La Motilla. Vladimir Kramnik (first on tie-break) and Veselin Topalov (yes, he again) shook off tournament favourite Garry Kasparov and reconfirmed their prominent position in the highest chess echelons.
